New club records established by Melanie Fisher and Stephen Pettit
Ely Runner Stephen Pettit justified his recent award as most improved
newcomer by knocking 8 minutes off last year's time at the the Great East
Run on Sunday.
Stephen led home the group of five Ely runners all of whom set PBs at this
popular and well organised race round quiet and scenic rural roads in
Suffolk. The course was described by the organisers as flat apart from a
'small Suffolk hill' at the start and finish.

EASTERN VETERANS AC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, WIMPOLE PARK, ARRINGTON,
SUNDAY 17th FEB 2008
Alfredo Verna 2nd MV45, Peter Gipp 3rd MV45, Ely 2nd Mens Team.
Four Ely Runners ran in these local cross country championships on a hilly
and frozen parkland course in the shadow of Wimpole Hall.
The men's (MV35-MV65) race consisted of two laps, reportedly 8k in length
but GPS-measured distance of about 7.32 km (4.55m).
The ladies race was shorter, a single lap at around 4k.

WYRE FOREST 8 (8.6 MILES), SUNDAY 10 FEB 2008
Ely Runner Adam Etches travelled to Worcestershire for this scenic and challenging race.
The hilly and muddy course followed tracks through Wyre Forest.
Adam finished in 11th place (5th SM) out of 285 finishers in a time of 56:04.
Conditions were clear with a ground frost
ST VALENTINES 30K, STAMFORD, SUNDAY 10th FEBRUARY 2008
There were 8 Ely Runners amongst the 608 finishers in this tough single loop
race on undulating roads around Stamford, South Lincolnshire.
Conditions on the day were perfect for running being cool, clear and sunny with little wind.

WOKINGHAM HALF MARATHON, WOKINGHAM, BERKSHIRE, SUNDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2008
Ely Runner Charlie Barker came 287th out of 1997 finishers in a PB time of 1:29:48.
Perfect conditions and a suitably flat course helped him to knock more than
a minute off his previous best time and achieve his first sub-1:30 half.

There were 21 Ely Runners amongst the 363 finishers in this fifth of the six 2007-08 races. The undulating 5.0 miles course was on packed woodland paths and slightly muddy tracks. Ely Runners were 3rd and retained their 4th overall position in the League. The first 10 to finish, including at least 3 ladies, make up the scoring team but all finishers influence the overall result. Members helping with the team and incorporated club championships were Eric Drury (Team Manager), Tony Hall (transport and kit), Rod Baron (timing, photographs and results), and Emily Knight (timing). WELLINGBOROUGH MULTI-TERRAIN 15k (ROUND 2 of 3), SUNDAY 3rd FEBRUARY 2008
Ian Day 1st in 15k again
This 3 race series of events includes 15k, 10k and 5k options. Ely Runner Ian Day finished the 15k course 1st of 85 runners in 53:13 which was 1:24 faster than when he won the Round 1 race last month. This time he led for the first 2.5 laps but was then overtaken. However he kept calm and close to regain the lead in the last 100m with a sprint finish. Ian is also 1st overall with a maximum 1,000 points and 5 points clear of his nearest rival with one race to go. The course was about half woodland tracks/roads and half soft grassland. Conditions were drier than in January except that it was very windy.
TRING TO TOWN 40 MILES ULTRA RACE, SUNDAY 3rd FEBRUARY 2008
Good time for Ian Green in first 40m Ultra
As part of his preparation for Ironman France later this year, Ely Runner Ian Green completed this mainly level run of about 40m following the Grand Union Canal from Tring to the finish near to Kew Gardens in 6 hours 37 minutes. The race had the option of running westwards on Saturday or eastwards on Sunday. Conditions were cool and dry but with a strong headwind in places.
SEAA CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, PARLIAMENT HILL, HAMPSTEAD HEATH, LONDON, SATURDAY 26th JANUARY 2008
There were five Ely Runners amongst the 832 finishers in the hotly contested Senior Men's race of 15 km (9 miles) on a three lap waterlogged course of unrelenting hills and mud. Official results:

Snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan was an impressive 189th in 57:33. He was reported to have taken up running instead of spending £100 an hour on therapy for his mood swings and now prefers running to snooker.
A blustery wind with sunny skies and mild temperatures made for a memorable and enjoyable race.

This series of events includes 15k, 10k and 5k options. Ely Runner Ian Day finished the 15k course 1st of 86 runners in 54:37 compared to 55:09 last year, when he was 4th. The course was about half woodland tracks/roads and half soft grassland. Conditions were very muddy but the weather was mild and windy without rain.
FROSTBITE FRIENDLY LEAGUE, 5.2 MILES MIXED TERRAIN, RAMSEY, SUNDAY 13th JANUARY 2008

There were 23 Ely Runners amongst the 383 official finishers in this fourth of the six 2007-08 league races. The almost level course of about 5.2 miles was on grass, mixed terrain tracks and concrete farm roads. Ely Runners were 2nd and improved from 7th to 4th team overall. The first 10 to finish, including at least 3 ladies, make up the scoring team but all finishers influence the overall result. Eric Drury was Team manager and Tony Hall assisted with transport. SUFFOLK AA CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, HOLBROOK , IPSWICH, SUNDAY 6th JANUARY 2008
Ely Runners Ian was 13th of 86 finishers in 41:32 on a course of about 11k at Holbrook Royal Hospital School south of Ipswich. There were three laps on parkland, playing fields, and around the River Stour defence system. It was undulating and a bit muddy in places. Conditions were sunny with not much wind.
Based on his performance, Ian will be considered for the Suffolk team for the Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships at Nottingham in March.
